Heidelberg Graduate School for the Humanities and Social Sciences

About Us

The Heidelberg Graduate School for the Humanities and Social Sciences is a central academic institute for doctoral candidates in the humanities, law and social sciences, who regard the exchange with academics from other disciplines as an important part of their own research. Since 2008, the HGGS has offered doctoral candidates at Heidelberg University and visiting scholars from different world regions an interdisciplinary core programme that supports them with selected seminars, lectures, workshops and conferences in their own research activities and provides them with a constructive forum for reflecting on their dissertation projects.

Academic Programmme

The HGGS interdisciplinary programme combines a series of compact masterclasses and tailor-made workshops with annual conferences and schools. During the academic year, the HGGS also invites guest lecturers from Germany and abroad and supports doctoral students in their networking with academics.

Membership

Heidelberg University provides through the HGGS an interdisciplinary programme and certificate in the humanities, law and social sciences that provides valuable academic experience through cross-faculty exchange. The HGGS membership is open to motivated individual doctoral candidates as well as doctoral candidates in research projects or research training groups and complements the regular disciplinary doctoral training without being time-consuming.

International Mobility

The HGGS regularly invites its members to participate in international courses and schools at the 4EU+ and LERU universities as well as other partner universities in Europe and abroad. Travel grants are available through the Graduate Academy, the 4EU+ network and Heidelberg University.
