Membership Applications

The Heidelberg Graduate School for the Humanities and Social Sciences (HGGS) invites doctoral candidates to become members. We are looking for highly motivated, excellent doctoral researchers from the Faculty of Modern Languages, the Faculty of Philosophy and the Faculty of Theology and the Faculty of Law, the Faculty of Behavioural and Cultural Studies and the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences, who show a particular interest in interdisciplinary research work. The HGGS programme complements the regular disciplinary doctoral training with courses and academic events of short duration.

Doctoral candidates in the humanities, law or social sciences can apply for membership of the HGGS programme in the first or second year of their doctorate at Heidelberg University. Scholarship holders of the Begabtenförderungswerke, the Landesgraduiertenförderung (LGF) and doctoral candidates who are already employees of an institute from the six participating faculties can be accepted in the fast-track procedure. All other applicants go through the regular application procedure. Applications for admission to the HGGS are possible for the summer and winter semesters.

Membership of the HGGS is not linked to funding from the HGGS. German and international members of the HGGS finance their stay in Heidelberg through an external scholarship or employment. However, international applicants with a PhD supervisor at one of the six participating faculties can apply for a GSSP scholarship, which the HGGS awards in cooperation with the DAAD for a period of up to four years.
