Doctoral Candidate Martina Marzullo

Martina Marzullo holds a B.A. in Foreign Languages, Cultures, Literatures, and Translation from the University of Rome ‘La Sapienza’ (Italy) and an M.A. in English Studies from Heidelberg University (Germany). Currently a PhD candidate at Heidelberg University, she has submitted her thesis titled “From Imitatio to Creatio: Transcoding Old English Literature in the Twenty-First Century”, supervised by Prof. Dr. Peter Paul Schnierer (Heidelberg University) and Dr. Thijs Porck (Leiden University). Her project is funded by the Landesgraduiertenförderung (LGF) program.

Her research focuses on contemporary literary engagements with early medieval Britain and its literary traditions, with particular attention to developing a new theoretical framework to analyze these works of art, often termed the ‘contemporary medieval’. Her research interests also include historical linguistics, translation and adaptation theory, literary and critical Theory, and medievalisms.

Beyond her research, she has actively contributed to academic initiatives: she was elected as a doctoral representative for Heidelberg University's Doctoral Convention for two consecutive years, presented papers at various international conferences, co-organized a joint 4EU+ and HGGS conference titled “The Spectre Haunting Academia: Understanding the Role of Academia in the Rise of the Far-Right”, and published several book chapters. She has also been a DAAD visiting scholar at both Cambridge University (UK) and Columbia University (US).
