Promotionskandidat:innen Hamzah Fansuri
Hamzah Fansuri, a doctoral student at the Institute of Anthropology, is currently conducting research under the supervision of Prof. Annnette Hornbacher on the phenomenon of the hijrah movement in contemporary Indonesia. This movement involves a return to the teachings and practices of Islam among urban Muslims. Referred to as the Islamic revival, it advocates for religious piety and has significantly shaped the portrayal of Islam in Indonesia over the past two decades. The emergence of mosque-based hijrah groups in numerous cities has led to contention with traditional Islamic groups or the state concerning religious freedom. Hamzah's research aims to investigate why individuals choose to hijrah and how tensions arise within themselves, their families, and their communities when they make this ethical decision. As a result, the study investigates into the ethical, economic, and political dimensions of this movement, which is also unfolding in various countries and religions with diverse articulations.
